Press Release to Accompany Release of Newport Teachers' Association Contract Changes for 2015-2016

The Newport School Board and Newport Teachers' Association are pleased to announce that they have ratified an updated collective bargaining agreement for the 2015-2016 school year, and will present the cost items from that contract for voter approval at this year's annual meeting. The contract changes include minor adjustments to the language of the collective bargaining agreement, as well as modest salary increases for teachers. Most teachers will receive a half-step advancement on the salary schedule, as well as a two percent increase to their base pay; some senior teachers will receive only the two percent increase to their base pay. Finally, the parties have agreed to reconvene to deal with any potential taxes or penalties on the District's health insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act, and the teachers have agreed to pay half of any such taxes or penalties if the parties cannot agree to a new health plan that would avoid them. This is a significant movement on the part of the teachers, and will help the District control the growth of healthcare costs in the future.
